Summary:

New York Times bestselling authors Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen team up for another electrifying thriller that pits a serial killer against Kendra Michaels’ heightened powers of deduction.

After scoring a plea deal in a high-profile murder trial, serial killer James Michael Barrett leads a grim parade of law enforcement officers to the body of his last victim. At the alleged burial site, the officers swing their shovels down and are met with a strange metallic sound they weren’t expecting. In a blink, a terrific explosion rocks the woods, killing Barrett and most of the officers instantly.

The detonation is only the beginning of a shocking case for FBI consultant Kendra Michaels—a string of heinous murders in the style of the very-dead Barrett mysteriously continue, and it becomes clear that he may not have been working alone. As the crimes accelerate, Kendra reluctantly accepts help from college student Tricia Walton, the only survivor of Barrett’s attacks. But the killer has a terrifying plan that Kendra and her team are only beginning to understand.

My thoughts:

This is the latest book in the Kendra Michaels series, a series that Iris Johansen co-writes with her son, Roy and I absolutely love this series. I find Kendra Michael to be such a unique and fascinating character, always proving that nothing and no one will stop her from getting the bad guys.

This newest installment is one crazy cat and mouse game that kept me on my toes the entire time. There are so many twists and turns that play out here and I found myself constantly changing who I thought was behind the copycat killings. I loved that Adam Lynch was back in the mix here, knowing that his expertise would be beneficial in this case and that Kendra would need his support, too, both emotionally and physically – this was a rough one in so many ways.

While this book can be read as a stand-alone and the authors do a great job filling in just who Kendra is and her amazing backstory and why she is such a unique investigator, I of course highly recommend reading this entire series in order. Not only are the earlier books great, but you get a much better picture of who Kendra really is, but of course, that’s my opinion.

I really enjoy this series. With each new book in the series, we find out just how truly gifted Kendra Michaels is and I will never tire of her proving herself to those who do not believe her. She is so feisty and fierce – my favorite type of heroine!

Audio thoughts:

To me, there is no better way to consume an Iris Johansen/Roy Johansen book than to listen to it, especially with Elisabeth Rodgers as the narrator. She just gets these books and her consistency from book to book, series to series is amazing. I don’t know how she does it, but she does and I am all for it. First think I do when I see a new book out by these authors is check to see who the narrator is and then as long as it’s Elisabeth Rodgers, I grab the audio and I’m so content listening it. She always manages to use the same voice for each character no matter how many books it has been since the last one and that is so important to me. And she does the best special effects – gun fire, car sounds, etc…it really is such a pleasure listening to her narrate these books!
