Summary:

Investigator Kendra
Michaels — whose former blindness has left her with uniquely insightful
observational skills — must put her life on the line to catch a
terrifying murderer setting his sights on some of society’s most
vulnerable in this electrifying new novel from the #1 New York Times and Edgar Award winning writing duo Iris and Roy Johansen.

Dr.
Kendra Michaels, blind for the first twenty years of her life before
gaining her sight via a revolutionary surgical procedure, is a renowned
investigator known for her razor-sharp senses–honed during her years in
the dark–and keen deductive abilities.

Now her skills are
needed uncomfortably close to home. Two staff members have been murdered
at a school for the blind where Kendra spent her formative years. But
the murders are puzzlingly dissimilar: one victim was brutally stabbed,
while the other was killed by a bullet to the head. Are the crimes
related? Or is Kendra on the hunt for more than one dangerous killer?

With
the killer (or killers) still on the loose, Kendra must put her life on
the line to unravel a terrifying conspiracy. But Kendra soon discovers
that she herself may hold the key to the deadliest secret of all..

My thoughts: This is the 7th book in the Kendra Michaels series, a series that Iris Johansen co-writes with her son, Roy and I absolutely love this series. I find Kendra Michael to be such a unique and fascinating character, always proving that nothing and no one will stop her from getting the bad guys.

I love that once again we see Kendra pulled into a case that at first she is none too happy to be part of, feeling that she is being manipulated into working on. Yet, when she realizes the location of the case, she can’t get there fast enough. It’s the school where she spent the early part of her life while she was still blind. It holds a special place in her heart and she clearly still has an emotional attachment to the place. But is this going to prevent her from getting the case solved?

This is a fast-paced thriller with lots of moving parts. It definitely kept me guessing all the way through and I loved that as is typical with this series, we see familiar faces pop up just at the right moment. Jessie Mercado is known for doing this and of course, Adam Lynch is around though he is not Kendra’s favorite person in the beginning of the book. I do love their chemistry and love that, even while they are fighting, it is still full of steam and tension.

There was a new character introduced that I hope will be around for a while – that of the four-legged variety. Harley is a special assistance dog and really captured my heart. He ended up staying with Olivia, Kendra’s best friend, and Kendra and boy is he an unusual dog.

This series just gets better and better and I love that I am immediately pulled into the books and captivated all the way through. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book to see what happens next not only for Kendra and Lynch, but to see if Harley is still around!

Audio thoughts: I love listening to Elisabeth Rodgers – she really has a knack for narrating Iris Johansen’s books. She gets the essence of her characters and her stories, and this book was no exception. I had listened to earlier books and was glad to see that Elisabeth was still narrating them – having the same narrator for a series is so key for me – that consistency for the voices makes all the difference!
