The #1 New York Times
bestselling author and the Edgar Award winning author are back with a
new a new novel featuring Kendra Michaels—hired gun for both the CIA and
FBI.

Born blind, Kendra Michaels spent the first twenty years of
her life living in the darkness. Then, thanks to a revolutionary
medical procedure developed by England’s Night Watch Project, she was
given the gift of sight. Her highly-developed senses (honed during her
years in the dark), combined with her new found vision, have made her a
remarkable investigator, sought after by law-enforcement agencies all
over the country. But her newest case finds her uncovering a deadly
truth about the shadowy organization that has given her so much.

Kendra
is surprised when she is visited by Dr. Charles Waldridge, the
researcher who gave her sight. But all is not well with the brilliant
surgeon; he’s troubled by something he can’t discuss with Kendra. When
Waldridge disappears that very night, Kendra is on the case, recruiting
government agent-for-hire Adam Lynch to join her on a trail that leads
to the snow-packed California mountains. There they make a gruesome
discovery: the corpse of one of Dr. Waldridge’s associates, brutally
murdered in the freezing snow. But it’s only the first casualty in a
white-knuckle confrontation with a deadly enemy who will push Kendra to
the limits of her abilities. Soon she must fight for her very survival
as she tries to stop the killing… and unearth the deadly secret of Night
Watch.

***Short & Sweet Reviews are
short, quick reviews. These will mainly be used for series books where I
have already done full reviews on some of the earlier books or for
books that I feel will suffice with a quick review. These will not be
used for review requests or blog tours.

My thoughts:It’s no secret that Iris Johansen‘s books are a favorite of mine and that I love her series – all of them, but her Kendra Michaels series that she writes with her son is a particular favorite of mine because Kendra is such a unique character. And in this latest installment, we get more of her backstory.  Because this case involves the one person who ended up giving her her sight back, we are treated to flashes of the past when Kendra was going through the treatment and all that that entailed.

We also see a little movement in the relationship between Kendra and Adam Lynch – I wouldn’t necessary call in a development because I’m not sure exactly where it’s going to go and that’s ok. It’s a slow process for Kendra and knowing her and all that she is, it’s exactly what I would expect from her.

There’s also the introduction of a new character that I just love – Jessie Mercado – and I really hope this isn’t the last we have seen of her. She is such a good balance to Kendra.

The book was suspenseful and full of action. The thought of this type of organization actually existing is a little scary, but with all the medical breakthroughs happening everyday, it’s not that far out of the realm of belief to think something like this could one day happen…definitely food for thought! I am looking forward to seeing what these two authors come up with next for Kendra, Adam and hopefully Jessie’s next adventure!!!Audio thoughts:I really do enjoy Elisabeth Rodgers’ narration of all of Iris Johansen‘s books – she just gets her characters and her writing! And it’s so nice to have that consistency with the characters and their voices. It’s like meeting up with old friends when I pick up these audio books and know that the narrator is the same – and as a faithful audiobook listener, that’s important to me. Elisabeth Rodgers is consistent with her voices and the pacing and I know that she does these stories well and I love that.

This series sound good. I don't read many suspenseful romances.
