My thoughts:
I became a fan of Chanel Cleeton when I discovered her Perez Family series. She is able to blend historical fiction with romance where the romance doesn’t overtake the story.
As soon as I saw this one, I grabbed it. It’s got a different feel to it, but I loved it all the same…and I will admit, there were definitely tears shed along the way. This is a love story unlike any I have ever read. Joe and Viv have the type of love that is all-consuming which is what makes this story hit so hard.
The way this story was told worked beautifully. Set in the 1960s, we go from Vivian reliving her love story, from their initial meeting to the days after the loss of the spacecraft. It is both heartwarming to watch them dance around each other and gradually fall in love, and heartbreaking in the days after the launch.
I never thought I’d be one for space stories, but I loved that while we do get a fair bit about the space race here, it’s more focused on the women behind the men. When Joe goes missing, the focus here is on Viv and how she is handling it. This is where Cleeton has always excelled — bringing us strong women and she does here, with grace and strength. Viv uses her background as a journalist to find out what really happened.
This is the perfect read for those that love historical fiction, a little science and a fantastic love story.

This was fantastic on audio, with Barton Caplan and Kelli Tager doing an amazing job bringing the story to life, infusing just the right amount of tension & emotion into their voiced to evoke the anxiety and fear needed, as well as the joy.
