My thoughts:
I have been a long-time fan of Nora Roberts, but I haven’t read many of her books written under her pseudonym, J.D. Robb. In fact, this is only the 3rd book I’ve read in this series and this is book 63. While I usually prefer to read series in order, I have definitely not done that here. To date, I’ve read books 47, 60 and now 63. Lucky for me, they each have worked as stand-alones, but I think I probably would have loved them even more had I read the series from the beginning, which I do plan to do at some point.
I really like the futuristic world that Robb has created here, and I found that while there is a lot of slang that I was not familiar with – and I’m sure had I read more of the books prior to picking this one up, I would know what the words meant – I didn’t feel that lost. What I did love was the crime component – that is something that I have enjoyed in each of the books immensely. This author has a talent for creating compelling murder mysteries and this one is no exception. I particularly loved how thought-provoking this one was in addition to be thrilling and suspenseful. Revenge is always a theme I love and it proves to be particularly emotional here.
This book is part procedural, part romantic suspense and very fast-paced. I loved that in this case, Eve’s husband Roarke, worked it with her. I need to start this series from the fully understand their dynamics, but boy do I love it when they are together! They sure have some great chemistry!!
Audio thoughts:
I decided to listen to this one and loved the narration. Susan Ericksen did an amazing job narrating this, giving each character their own unique voice and personality. If I do go back to the beginning, audio is how I will go and I sure hope she is the narrator for most, if not all, of the books!
