My thoughts:
I have loved Lauren’s previous books and even though this one is a bit of a departure — it’s not dark academia — it was still a must read and I loved it all the same!!
Set in the music arena of downtown Nashville, I loved this mystery, with a protagonist I hope we haven’t seen the last of! PI Kelly Williams is someone who is easy to get behind, someone you quickly realize has a few secrets of her own and that just makes her all the more endearing and one who can easily sympathize with the clients she takes on, like Sarah Owen’s, better known as Seraph, the lead singer of The Garden Snakes.
This story is layered, full of secrets and hidden messages as well as characters that you aren’t sure you can trust. I loved that we have a single POV here — I loved seeing everything unfold from Kelly’s perspective as not only do we get to see the case unravel as Kelly does, but it also allows us more insight into Kelly herself.
Overall, this hits just right — a memorable protagonist and a locked-room feel mystery that keeps you guessing all the way through, and the themes of obsession around fame and all that comes with it. While a fun read, it’s also quite thought-provoking.
Audio thoughts:
I thought Amara Jasper did a great job bringing this story to life. She infused just the right tension into her voice as needed and her pacing was spot on.
