Summary:
Misery meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers in this genre-bending, claustrophobic hospital gothic from the bestselling author of The Death of Jane Lawrence.
Margaret lives with a rare autoimmune condition that has destroyed her life, leaving her isolated. It has no cure, but she’s making do as best she can—until she’s offered a fully paid-for spot in an experimental medical trial at Graceview Memorial.
The conditions are simple, if grueling; she will live at the hospital as a full-time patient, subjecting herself to the near-total destruction of her immune system and its subsequent regeneration. The trial will essentially kill most of, but not all of her. But as the treatment progresses and her body begins to fail, she stumbles upon something sinister living and spreading within the hospital.
Unsure of what’s real and what is just medication-induced delusion, Margaret struggles to find a way out as her body and mind succumb further to the darkness lurking throughout Graceview’s halls.
My thoughts:
Oh my word … this is going to take me a beat to process what I just read! This is one messed up story…but one I could not put down!! I was pulled into the creepy story from the get-go and even though I was unsure as to whether our MC, Meg, was the most reliable of characters, I still found myself completely captivated by her and everything she was going through. Was it really happening or was it all in her head?!?
This book will absolutely get under your skin and it’s dark and unsettling as well as completely terrifying. But it also gives you so much to think about. I’m not a fan of hospitals at the best of times, so this just plays with my worst fears. The vulnerability that Meg felt is so palpable, as is her fear of what is expected…and as she continues to get treatment, we wonder just what is really in those pouches…
An atmospheric, claustrophobic fever-dream of a read, this is definitely a perfect book to pick up during #spookyseason!
Audio thoughts:
When I saw that this was being narrated by Xe Sands, I couldn’t resist listening to it. She is one of my favorite narrators and she did such an amazing job bringing this story to life. Her voice has that dreamlike quality to it, matching the feel of the story and it just works so well.
