Summary:

Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him. Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda’s motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons. Decades before, when his father was imprisoned for murder, this was Will’s home.

It appears that the case that launched Amanda’s career 40 years ago has suddenly come back to life – and it involves the long-held mystery of Will’s birth and parentage. Now these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past, if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed.

My thoughts:

This series just keeps getting better and better! I don’t know how Karin Slaughter does it…but she proves over and over again what a talented and skilled writer she truly is.

This latest installment provides us with quite a complex set of plots and I loved every second of it. We really get a much better look at Amanda’s character, Will’s boss and I so appreciated that. She is quite the character and I love her snarkiness but getting to know more about her really put things into perspective. We also learn more about Will’s past and again, as someone who loves character development, this is what I have been waiting for this entire series!

I loved how there was the present/past timeline here – it worked to not only build suspense and tension but to also provide the background we so desperately needed and wanted. So much was revealed about these two characters and now I understand the dynamics between them a lot better.

This book kept me completely captivated from start to finish. The twists and turns it took were nothing short of surprising, which I loved. This series is definitely proving to be one of my favorites!

Audio thoughts:

Kathleen Early is the queen of narration for this series! She has nailed the voices and I don’t know what I’m going to do if they change the narrator. She brings consistency to each character and really gets the nuances of them. I have to make sure each time I select the audio book that it is Kathleen Early as the narrator…she really is the best!
