Summary:

Two armed men enter the police station in tiny Heartsdale, Georgia, and open fire. When the shooting stops, an officer is dead, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver is seriously wounded, and the survivors—including a class of grade-school children and medical examiner Sara Linton—are held hostage. In a tense standoff that could erupt at any moment into more bloodletting—with her ex-husband on the threshold of death—Sara must search for answers and an escape in the memories of a time at the start of their relationship when another brutal, shocking crime shattered their small-town world. Because the sins of the past have caught up with Sara and Jeffrey … with a vengeance.

My thoughts:

I am loving this series and I have to say, this one really caught me a bit off guard the way it was written. I still enjoyed it, but took a little way for me to figure out the purpose of the past storyline…so if you haven’t read this one and are struggling, my advice is to stick with it.

This book is intense with the hostage situation happening right at the beginning of the book in the police station. Both Sara and Jeffrey were there and are caught up in the situation as well as a bunch of students and this got my adrenaline pumping, not knowing how this would end. Then the story moves to the past when Jeffrey and Sara had first started dating and I was a bit taken back because I couldn’t figure out what in tarnation this had to do with anything…but believe me, it does.

Nothing that we want to stay in the past ever does and I loved the way Karin Slaughter wove this story together so that she kept you guessing what would happen next. This book is dark and full of suspense, and most impressive of all, tons of great character development. I loved learning so much about both Sara and Jeffrey. This is why I read series and I feel that this is probably the best book in the series so far because of that.

Audio thoughts:

Once again, I was thrilled to see that Kathleen Early narrated this book.  She has narrated the previous books in this series and her consistency with the characters is uncanny. She really gets the nuances of Karin Slaughter’s writing, knowing when to make her voice reflect the chilling and disturbing scenes that are happening. She infuses just the right amount of tension and emotion as needed and it makes for such a great book to listen to!
