Summary:

An apparent student suicide has brought medical examiner Sara Linton to the local college campus, along with her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver. But a horribly mutilated corpse yields up few answers. And a suspicious rash of subsequent “suicides” suggests that a different kind of terror is stalking the youth of Heartsdale, Georgia – a nightmare that is coming to prey on Sara Linton’s loved ones.

A small town is being transformed into a killing ground. And the key to a sadistic murderer’s motive and identity may be held in the unsteady hands of a campus security guard – a former police detective driven from the force by the hellish memories that will never leave her. Lena Adams survived the unthinkable and has paid a devastating price. Now the survival of future victims may depend upon her – when she can barely protect herself.

My thoughts:

It’s no secret that I love Karin Slaughter’s books, as dark and disturbing as they can be. I’m slowly making my way through her Grant County/Will Trent series so that when the new Will Trent book comes out later this year, I will be ready for it! One thing I’ve realized with these books is that as much as I want to binge them, I need to spread them out. But at the same time, I need to step it up or I am not going to be ready come August…quite a pickle I find myself in.

One thing I will say for all of Karin Slaughter’s books is that for all the violence she puts in her books, it’s never gratuitous. Sometimes she’s able to skirt around it and sometimes it needs to be plainly seen, but it’s always there for a reason – it contributes to the story she is telling. And as a reader, I appreciate that. I don’t mind dark books, but if there is something there just for the sake of being there, I get a little frustrated.

This latest installment is quite dark, with students winding up dead. Are they suicides or is it murder? Things take a more personal turn when Sara’s sister ends up one of the victims – but luckily she was just severely hurt and not killed. It is interesting to note here that Lena is no longer working in a police capacity here and that was an interesting turn of events.

All in all, this was a great installment and once again, there are threads that have carried through since the first book, which is why I’m such a fan of reading series in order. I’m already quite eager to pick up the next book…hopefully very soon!

Audio thoughts:

I listened to this one and I was so glad to see that Kathleen Early was the narrator. She has narrated the previous two books in this series and her consistency with the characters is uncanny. She really gets the nuances of Karin Slaughter’s writing, knowing when to make her voice reflect the chilling and disturbing scenes that are happening. She infuses just the right amount of tension and emotion as needed and it makes for such a great book to listen to!
