Summary:

Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.

When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moment, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from YA Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano.

My thoughts:

Sometimes I’m a little worried about books that are getting all the hype, but there is a reason this one is…it’s so much fun! And yes, this is exactly what this book is – a fun, engaging book that keeps you on your toes, guessing as to what is going to happen next the entire time.

There is nothing I love more in the thriller genre than a refreshingly new take on the same old and Elle Cosimano definitely delivers with this one. From her protagonist Finlay, who is so real and relatable, to the antics that she manages to get herself involved in to the uniquely refreshing range of other characters we are introduced to, I could not read this one fast enough. It is funny, smart, witty and completely addicting.

There is so much that I loved about this book but so much that I can’t say because I don’t want to give anything away. This one is one of those books where you really don’t want to know too much about it because it takes all the fun and surprises away. All I will say is that in some ways, Finlay reminded me a little bit of Stephanie Plum but this book is definitely quite different.

I am thrilled that this is the start of a new series – you all know how much I love my series and this is definitely one I will be looking forward to continuing with. And that ending totally leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger so you know I’m a little anxious for book 2 to come out!

If you like thrillers and need a good laugh at the same time, definitely pick this one up!
