Two girls go missing. Only one will return.

The couple
that offers the highest amount will see their daughter again. The
losing couple will not. Make no mistake. One child will die….

When
nine-year-old best friends Charlie and Amy disappear, two families are
plunged into a living nightmare. A text message confirms the
unthinkable; that the girls are the victims of a terrifying kidnapping.

And
when a second text message pits the two families against each other for
the life of their children, the clock starts ticking for D.I. Kim Stone
and the squad.

Seemingly outwitted at every turn, as they
uncover a trail of bodies, Stone realizes that these ruthless killers
might be the most deadly she has ever faced, and that their chances of
bringing the girls home alive are getting smaller by the hour….

Untangling
a dark web of secrets from the families’ past might hold the key to
solving this case. But can Kim stay alive long enough to do so? Or, will
someone’s child pay the ultimate price?

My thoughts:This is the third book in Angela Marsons’ DI Kim Stone series and I have to say…this series just keeping getting better and better – and it already started out pretty good! With each book, I am continuously astounded at how well Angela Marsons is able to twist and craft a thriller, create deliciously devious, evil and downright dispicable characters that just beg you to want more of…I can‘t get enough of her books!!!

What I love about these books is that they are fast-paced! They start off with a bang and never really let up the whole way through and this one is no exception. The case that DI Kim Stone and her team have found themselves involved in was captivating and disturbing and takes you on quite an emotional, thrilling journey. And these books are anything but predictable – everything I think I have even a little bit figured out, I find I am proven wrong! The twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat and hooked to the story until the very end.

I also love that you don’t just get into Kim’s head, but other characters as well. This makes for such a well-rounded book. In this case, we hear from the girls during their ordeal – and what harrowing and heartbreaking sections these are; and we hear from the parents. It really brings this case to life, having these characters open their thoughts to us.

DI Kim Stone is not someone I would want to cross – she’s tough and barks out orders, but she’s got a soft side that not many people see. I absolutely love the intereactions with her dog – they just melt my heart and show that she is human. She is such a complex, complicated character, full of flaws and even though with each of the three books so far we have learned more and more about her, I think we have only scratched the surface of just who Kim Stone really is.

This series is so good and I cannot wait to start the next book…

Audio thoughts:Jan Cramer does a great job with this audio book – I just love listening to her!!! She is so consistent with the voices from book to book and her pacing and tone is spot on. I am a big fan of having the same narrator throughout a series, whenever possible, and am so happy that she is continuing on with this series…to me, she gets DI Kim Stone and all her nuances.

Books in this series:

I've listened to the first 3 of the books in this series as well and loved them. It's about time I went on to #4 and #5. I agree that Jan Cramer does a great job and I want to know more about Kim Stone.
