‘I’m not your mother. You’re a monster. I don’t want you’

Women who gave a child up for adoption are being killed. A knock at their front door begins a nightmare from which they will never wake up.

For Detective Ruby Preston
and her team, it is a race against time to connect the dots before the
killer can strike again. But when Ruby receives a sinister email, the
case takes a terrifying personal twist.

Could the clues to the identity of the killer lie in Ruby’s own past?

Who can she trust with her secrets?

And could Ruby be next?

My thoughts:This is the first book in Caroline Mitchell’s new series and it‘s also the first time I’m reading one of her books – and it was a home run on both accounts!!! As you all know, I’ve been on a big crime/suspense reading kick lately and this is definitely in that category – it’s twisted and dark and pulls you in right from the get-go and doesn’t let up until the very end!

I love, love, love DS Ruby Preston – she’s complex and strong-willed, feisty and determined, and she’s got a past! I love that…it means that she’s got baggage and that it’s going to come out – and while some does throughout the course of this book – I have a feeling we’ve only scratched the surface of the complexity that is Ruby Preston! And I can’t wait to delve deeper into her psyche.

This book is so twisted…someone is targeting women who have given up their daughters for adoption. Just who is this Lucy and why is she targeting these women? Without giving too much away, I will say, Lucy is one sick, crazy character – probably one of the best characters I’ve read in a while…she is willing to do anything to pull off this crazy fantasy she has created in her head – no matter what cost. Just thinking of her now gives me the creeps!

This is a fast-paced book, with plenty of twists and turns throughout. Ruby’s personal connection to the case only adds to the already tense situation, especially when Lucy begins stalking her, and this just ratchets up the suspense and adds another layer to the mix.

I cannot wait to see what happens next for DS Ruby Preston – this is definitely going to be a thrilling series and I am already looking forward to the next installment!

Audio thoughts:This was such a great book to listen to and Emma Newman did a great job with the audio. She gave each character their own unique voice, but more importantly the tension and suspense came across when needed. I do hope Emma Newman continues to narrate this series as I would love to keep listening to it and prefer to have the continuity of narrators!
