Summary:

In Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery Sad Cypress, a woman damned by overwhelming evidence stands accused of murdering her romantic rival, and only Hercule Poirot stands between her and the gallows.

Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stood serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence was damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity, and the means to administer the fatal poison.

Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, only one man still presumed Elinor was innocent until proven guilty. Hercule Poirot was all that stood between Elinor and the gallows.…

My thoughts:

October’s theme for #ReadChristie2025 was Lawyers and I went with one of the alternative suggestions, 𝙎𝙖𝙙 𝘾𝙮𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨.⁣

I’m back with another Hercule Poirot book, and another reread — I ended up doing quite a few rereads in for the challenge this year and I have to say, I’m not all the mad about it! Rereading these books now, having gained so much knowledge about the Agatha Christie herself and her writing, is quite enlightening!⁣

In this particular installment, for instance, we see Agatha’s background come into play here and for fear of spoiling the outcome, I’ll just leave it at that. I also loved that with a smaller cast of characters, we don’t have a lot of suspects, though through the use of many flights of hand and red herrings, the culprit isn’t as easy to figure out as one might think. ⁣

It is interesting to note that part of this book does take place in a courtroom…something not too common in Agatha Christie’s books.
