Summary:
Desperately avoiding the clutches of professional hit men who have already put a bullet in his leg, Cork finds sanctuary outside the small Michigan town of Bodine. But while he’s hiding out in an old resort owned by his cousin Jewell DuBois, a bitter widow with a fourteen-year-old son named Ren, the body of a young girl surfaces along the banks of the Copper River — and then another teenager vanishes. Instead of thwarting his assassins, Cork focuses on tracking a ring of killers who prey on innocent children — before anyone else falls victim. But as his deadly followers close in, Cork realizes he’s made an error any good man might make — and it may be his last.
My thoughts:
The sixth book in the Cork O’Connor book and it picks up right where the previous book left off and I could not start it soon enough! As I mentioned in my previous review, one of my favorite aspects of this series is just how strong a sense of place these books have, no matter where they are located and that is certainly the case here as this one is set up North because Cork is on the run due to a hitman being after him. But that doesn’t stop him from getting involved in all that is happening there!
I cannot tell you how much I love these books. Each one is so intricately plotted, keeping you fully invested in what is going on, both with the characters you have already come to love and the new ones you meet in each installment. Here it is Cork’s cousin and a young girl that I found myself rooting hard for. I also love that we continue to get Indian folklore woven in throughout these stories. I find I am learning so much in these books!
But, as these stories are crime fiction, there is also a lot of evil – the bad guys are really bad and the crimes they commit are terrible. Luckily, we are spared the truly awful graphic scenes – those are left off the page, and we are just left with the aftermath. And while I can do dark, it’s sometime nice to not have to see everything so explicitly described.
These books aren’t short by any means, but I find myself so wrapped up in what is happening, wondering who can be trusted and how things are going to be resolved, that I don’t even notice the length…and because I listen to them – and they are amazing on audio by the way – I find myself looking for ways to continue listening so I don’t have to stop.
Audio thoughts:
I was thrilled to see David Chandler was narrating this one – he has so far narrated the whole series and I hope he continues. He just gets the characters and all their nuances.
