Summary:

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex–movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder ― from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient.

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

My thoughts:

Alex Michaelides is without a doubt one of my favorite authors! I fell in love with his writing in his debut novel, The Silent Patient and then his follow-up book, The Maidens, was equally as good and now this one was another stellar reading experience. This was a most-anticipated read and it completely surpassed my expectations!

I loved the way this book was told – it was such a unique way to tell a story and I think that is what really sets this one apart. It’s like sitting down with a friend and they are telling you a story, complete with side notes and everything. Ever more telling is that every character we meet is unreliable, including our narrator, so you are never quite sure who you can trust.

Set on a Greek Island where a bunch of movies stars and theater actors have gathered, it’s quite easy to get caught up in the drama that is unfolding, including a murder, but that is the beauty of this book. Once the twists start coming, they don’t stop and I could not put this one down. With the short chapters, it is easy to binge this one in a day – which is totally what I did and I have no regrets, other than I now have to wait until however long it takes Alex to write another book!

I also loved the Easter Eggs that popped up from his other books. I loved how he worked these in…but not to worry if you haven’t read these two books. This book is a stand-alone, as are both his others. It’s just a little treat for those of us who are loyal fans.

A thrilling character study with nods to Agatha Christy and set up like a Shakespeare play, this is an unsettling and clever “whydunnit” that kept me guessing until the very end. Be sure to pick this one up when it hits shelves in January!

Audio thoughts:

This was such a fun book to listen to and I thought the narrator, Alex Jennings, did a great job bringing the story to life. I was so invested in the story that I ended up binging it in one day!
