Summary:

An explosive conspiracy sets the ocean roiling for a deep-diving investigator in a riveting thriller by the author of the Amazon Charts bestseller The Girl Beneath the Sea.

A distress call draws rescuers Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit to a cruise ship off the coast of Fort Lauderdale that’s sinking from a mysterious explosion. When it appears to be the work of an ecoterrorist and other ships are threatened, it becomes a race against time. More clues are discovered, and evidence is in danger of being washed away by a coming tropical storm. Sloan grows concerned that key details are being ignored, and a strange lack of urgency by authorities sets off alarms.

As the troubling questions compound, Sloan is determined to chase down every lead she has. Her persistence is getting her closer to the truth: that there’s something far more troubling at play than the official explanation. It’s also putting Sloan on a collision course with an enemy more powerful than she realizes, in a case so complex and deadly it may be impossible to prove. Now cracking the case is a matter of staying one step ahead of someone with every resource imaginable to bury Sloan and everything she knows.

My thoughts:

This is the third book in Andrew Mayne’s Underwater Investigation Unit series and I really love this series. I first became a fan of this author when I read his Jessica Blackwood series and now this latest series is proving to be just as fun and captivating…and how fun that Jessica and even Theo from Andrew’s Naturalist series both had cameos in this particular installment – I loved that!

As I’ve mentioned in my reviews of the previous books in this series, what I find so addicting about this series is the fact that we have a police procedural but with the added layer of underwater diving. It just ups the danger level in just about everything and adds another layer of tension to all investigations and I love it! I myself am not a diver but my husband is and I know how dangerous it can be if not done properly. So many times I feel my anxiety levels racing while reading this series – to me, that’s always a good sign!

This latest installment starts off with quite a bang, literally, and things never quite settle down. I love that these books are always so action-packed – they keep me flipping the pages until the very end. Who knew that when Sloan and her partner responded to an SOS from a cruise ship that they would find themselves involved in government conspiracies, espionage, and bioterrorism. And of course, Sloan is never one to skirt from danger. I love that she is such a force to be reckoned with, sometimes to her own detriment. She doesn’t always think things through, sometimes finding herself in hot water when she acts before she should, but she does get the job done.

I am so eager to get my hands on the next book…a few developments happened towards the end of the book and I’m eager to see where they lead.
