Summary:

Family secrets, revenge, and righteous fury collide in an international bestselling novel of psychological suspense and intrigue.

Clara and Henrik are married and living in a beautiful inherited villa in Oslo. She is a single-mindedly ambitious child-rights activist at the Ministry of Justice. Having grown up in rural Western Norway, she is also an Oslo outsider. Henrik is a doctor from a well-to-do Oslo family. Though their marriage is under serious strain, they share a devotion to their twin sons and their work. Outwardly, they’re a successful couple both dedicated to saving lives.

Then a Pakistani Norwegian child is admitted to Henrik’s hospital and dies in his care. The boy had clearly been the victim of child abuse. Soon after, a related murder rocks the city. It won’t be the last. The events unearth years of trauma, secrets, and buried resentments at the heart of Clara and Henrik’s fragile marriage.

Little by little, in the wake of these shattering crimes, the veneer of normalcy begins to fall away. But even then, nothing is as it appears.

My thoughts:

As soon as I saw this was set in Norway, I knew I had to read it and I am so glad I did. Ruth Lillegraven is a new-to-me author and this psychological thriller, which is now a series, ended up being so much more than I expected it to be.

I love books where nothing is as it seems and that is exactly what we have here. Add in some unreliable narrators and you have a book that quickly becomes one that you just cannot put down. I loved that as the book moves forward, you are constantly changing your mind as to who the murderer is. I thought I had it figured out so many times and it wasn’t until just before it was finally revealed that I was entirely sure. I love books like this. They really keep you on your toes.

I also loved how brooding and unsettling this book is. As things are happening in the present and we are learning about are main protagonists, Clara and Henrik, we are also getting insight into their marriage and into Clara’s past. It really is quite a brilliantly plotted book with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you guessing as to where it is ultimately headed.

While I was sent this audio last year, I never got to it until just recently but that turned out to be a good thing because now this story is fresh in my mind as I head into the next book, which comes out soon. And after the way this book ended, I’m so glad I waited…that ending was crazy! If you like thrillers and aren’t afraid of a little darkness, I highly recommend this one!

Audio thoughts:

This was narrated by a full cast and I absolutely loved that! It made all the transitions between the characters so easy to follow and the pacing was pitch perfect. I cannot wait to see who narrates the second as I will most definitely be listening to it!
