As you know, I’m a huge historical fiction fan, so I was thrilled see some of my favorite authors in this mix. What I love about picking up something like this is that it allows me to get to read something from beloved favorites like Martha Hall Kelly, Paula McLain, Fiona Davis and Jesmyn Ward, and at the same time, getting a feel for the writing of some new-to-me authors, in this case, Oliver Hawker, Esi Edugyan and Thomas Keneally. And now I want to read more of their writing!

And the fact that these pieces are all short means that you can either read each piece in one sitting, spreading them out over a few days, or devour all seven stories in a matter of a few hours!  Each story captivated me completely and kept me engaged all the way through! They are engaging and original stories that I really enjoyed. I especially loved that quite a few of them included author’s notes – my favorite part of historical fiction books! – where we come to find out that many of these came about because of research the authors were doing for previous or upcoming books. That is just so cool that they decided to take that extra material and gift us with a short story rather than just discard it. This is why I always read these author notes…you never know what little tidbit you will find out!

I highly recommend this short story collection – whether you read them all or just pick a few…you won’t regret it!

What do you think? Will you be reading or listening to these? Or have you done so already? Let me know if you do!
