Summary:

Nobody can get into the mind of an erratic killer – except an unpredictable detective.

When a young man is found lying on a station platform with a hole in his head, DI Kate Young is called in to investigate the grisly murder. But the killing is no one-off. As bodies start to pile up, she is faced with what might be an impossible task – to hunt down a ruthless killer on a seemingly random rampage.

Meanwhile, Kate has her own demons to battle as she struggles to come to terms with her husband’s death. And she is hell-bent on exposing corruption within the force and bringing Superintendent John Dickson to justice. But with the trail of deception running deeper – and closer to home – than she could ever have imagined, she no longer knows who she can trust.

With her grip on reality slipping, Kate realises that maybe she and the killer are not so different after all. But time is running out and Kate is low on options. Can she catch the killer before she loses everything?

My thoughts:

Carol Wyer is one of my favorite crime fiction writers and I am just loving this latest series. This is the third book in her Detective Kate Young series and I really think this series just gets better and better with each new book!

What I love the most about this series is how perfectly balanced each book is between the police procedural with the character development. It really makes for such an engaging and thrilling read and while normally I would say that these types of books can be read independently, I strongly urge you to read this series in order because there is so much that hinges on what has already transpired in the previous books. Yes, there is a self-contained case that Kate and her team are called to help solve, but it is the secondary case that Kate has been trying to solve – that of her husband’s death that really comes to a head here.

This book starts off with such an intense scene and I loved that. As the book moves forward, I was desperately trying to figure out how it was connected to what was going on with the current killings. While I had a slight inkling as to who the murderer might be, I still had chills when Kate finally put all the pieces together because of the personal connection she has to this – and let me just say, this is one of my favorite aspects of her character. I won’t say more for fear of spoiling anything, but I really did love this part.

There were so many twists and turns this book takes, both with the case at the forefront of this book, and the case Kate is working on privately. The book is fraught with tension and it really keeps you on edge throughout. I loved that once again, we are privy to the killer’s mind every so often. Being in their heads, even for a little while always makes for such a chilling, ominous read.

I flew through this one and then to be left with that cliff-hanger of an ending…how I am going to wait to see what happens next? I just hope we don’t have to wait too long! For all those who love an addicting, thrilling crime-fiction series, I highly recommend picking this one up if you have not already done so.

Audio thoughts:

I was thrilled to see that Henrietta Meire was back to narrate this book. I love when there is consistency of narrators in a series and she has so far been the narrator for this entire series. Her voices and pacing are just right and I feel this book just lends itself to audio. It’s so good and I will continue to listen to the series for as long as it continues.

Books in this series:

  1. An Eye for the Eye
  2. A Cut for a Cut
  3. A Life for a Life
