Summary:

It all started out as a game.

Just a way to have fun. We figured as long as we had rules, it wouldn’t be a problem.

RULE #1: Only break into one another’s houses.

RULE #2: Only take stuff that can be replaced.

It worked for a while. Whoever’s turn it was to break in got a rush, and the rest of us laughed over the trophies they brought back. But then someone went too far. Lives got ruined. Someone is dead.

And I might be next.

My thoughts:

One of my goals once again this year is to make sure to include some backlist review books along with all the new books I read each month and one of the ways that works well for me to get this done is to grab the audio version of the book from the library. And since the audio was released after the print version, it worked out that I waited to pick this one up!

This was a short read and therefore a short audio, coming in at just under 5 hours, but it still managed to keep me hooked. Yes, it is a YA book and while I don’t tend to read a ton in this genre, I did enjoy this one…it’s a mystery and had a few really good twists that kept me guessing all the way through. I had my theories, though I was proven wrong.

The characters really made this book interesting. A bunch of high school students that are imperfect, and at times quite annoying, yet you find you need to keep reading to see what they get up to next. The game they come up with is just that at first – fun but with strict rules – until things take a deadly turn and Harper is convinced someone is targeting their group and wonders if maybe its even someone in their group.

This is definitely a binge-worthy read and while the mystery is on the lighter side, it’s still engaging and entertaining. The last part of the book really kept me on my toes. I’ll definitely be keeping this author on my list to see what else she writes.

Audio thoughts:

This book translated really well onto audio and the narrator, Heather Costa, did a great job bringing it to life. Her pacing and intonation were spot on and she gave the characters their own personalities. I really enjoyed this one and ended up listening to it in just one afternoon because I just couldn’t put it down.
