Summary:

Find your magic

For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.

Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk.

From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Back in New York City each begins a risky journey as they try to escape the family curse.

The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy.

My thoughts:

As I continue on with this series, I am sticking with the audio and I am still loving it. This series is so much more than the magic of witches. It is deep and encompassing and I just know it is going to be a series that I will revisit again and again.

This story, as with the previous one, grabbed me right away and kept me engaged throughout. I fell in love all over again with the Owens family and loved that while this one didn’t necessarily focus on magic per say, it did focus on identity and self-discovery. Of course, there is always the theme of family running through and I just love that.

I completely fell for the Owen siblings, Franny, Jet and Vincent and could not get enough of them. I loved Franny’s sassiness and how she was strong yet flawed. Vincent was the typical bad-bad boy yet my heart ached for him something fierce. And Jet…oh did my heart break for her. I have a feeling she is going to be my favorite character in this series.

“…she opened a book and was therefore saved, discovering that a novel was as great an escape as any spell.”

As much as I need to finish all four of these books so I am ready for our chat, I also want to savor them because they are just so good! I can see myself rereading them every October…they are just that good!

Audio thoughts:

Again, I decided to listen to this book because of time constraints and I have to say it really was a great listening experience. The narrator, Marin Ireland, does a fantastic job bringing the book to life. She has such a lyrical voice and I thought she did a great job with the voices.
