Summary:

I am the legion of the night …

He appears in the darkness like a ghost, made of shadows and fear—the Midnight Man. He comes for the parents but leaves the children alive, tiny witnesses to unspeakable horror. The bedroom communities of Los Angeles are gripped with dread, and the attacks are escalating.

Still reeling from her best friend’s close call in a bombing six months ago, FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix has come to Los Angeles to assist in the Midnight Man investigation and do what she does best—hunt a serial killer. Her work is what keeps her going, but something about this UNSUB—unknown subject—doesn’t sit right. She soon realizes that this case will test not only her skills but also her dedication, for within the heart of a killer lives a secret that mirrors Caitlin’s own past. Hesitancy is not an option, but will she be able to do what must be done if the time comes?

My thoughts:

This is the third book in Meg Gardiner’s UNSUB series and I have to say, this series just gets better and better with each book. I am so glad I finally picked up these books and have been reading them with my booksta buddy Sonica – we have been having such great discussions after reading each one!

This book kept me not only on the edge of my seat the entire time, but I also found that I was holding my breath quite a few times. It is definitely quite an adrenaline-fueled read that kept me flipping through the pages because I needed to see where things were headed. The fact that children were involved had such an emotional impact this time and it made it that much more tension-filled.

I was also thrilled to see that Rainey was back to work the case with Caitlin. I loved her in previous book and thought they worked well together. I was hoping she was not going to be a one-book appearance kind of character and to my great joy, she was back.

This book is all types of creepy – probably not the best book to be reading at night with the lights off, especially as in this case, we have a serial killer striking families at night. While the book is fiction, it does has shades of true crime as it mirrors some of the more famous cases out there, but no worries if you don’t know anything about them.

This book is crazy addicting and there are definitely threads that have been carried over from the first book – all the more reason to read this series in order – that sets us up for another book! I really hope that next book is in the works because there are still questions left unanswered…and I need them answered!!!
