Summary:

Running for her life could leave her breathless.
A former reporter for the Los Angeles Times,
Aloa Snow knows what it means to be down and out. Once highly
respected, she’s now blackballed, in debt, and dealing with the echoes
of an eating disorder. Until she gets one more shot to prove that she
has what it takes—with a story some would die for…

After the body
of a promising young athlete, Hayley Poole, is recovered in the Nevada
desert, authorities rule it a suicide. But when Aloa discovers that the
girl’s boyfriend died in a similar accident only months before, her
investigative instincts are on high alert. It turns out the girl was on
the run from secrets that could kill.

This case is murder for
Aloa, and Hayley won’t be the last one to suffer. Someone very powerful
forced Hayley to run for her life. Now Aloa must do the same.

My thoughts: I love a book that pulls me in right from the start and when that book also happens to be the start of a new series, it’s even better! This detective mystery has quite a few memorable characters and is fast-paced – which keeps you flipping those pages as you try to figure out alongside Aloa just what is going on.

I really liked Aloa Snow – I liked that she is not unreliable, yet she is deeply flawed. Not that I have anything against unreliable narrators, but I think in this case, it worked just as well to have our main character be full of demons that she constantly struggles with…this makes her all the more attractive and interesting. I also liked that through flash-backs, we learn a bit about Aloa and her history, especially that of her relationship with Michael. They have a tenuous relationship now at best, yet Michael can only think of her to investigate this case…but is it just about the work or is there a chance for a reconciliation?

We
also meet some other characters and I wonder if they will continue to
make appearances in this series or if they were only part of this first
installment, such as the “Brain Farm,” the group of anarchists that help
Aloa with research; and Erik and Guillermo, the duo that owns the
restaurant Aloa frequents and who are quick to offer comfort food and
support when needed. I would love to see more off all these characters –
they all really were quite memorable and added their own unique quirk
to the book.

There are quite a bit of twists and turns as Aloa starts investigating the death of Hayley…and the tension and suspense build steadily throughout the book until the very end when everything is finally revealed. While Aloa’s primary focus is to find out what really happened to Hayley, she wouldn’t mind bringing about a bit of redemption for herself at the same time.

I enjoyed the first installment of this new series and am looking forward to seeing how it progresses from here. Hopefully this is a long-running series as I think there is some potential here!

Tom Corson-Knowles, the author who founded Bestseller Ranking Pro, spent six long years trying to get a traditional publishing deal (and failed miserably). He finally decided to self publish his first book on Kindle in February, 2012.

That one decision changed his life (and the lives of the more than 30,000 authors he's since taught how to write, publish and market their books professionally).

Just twelve months after self publishing his first book, Tom had his first $12,000+ month from Kindle ebook royalties alone.

In Bestseller Ranking Pro, Tom will share with you his step-by-step system for becoming a bestselling author.

These strategies have also helped Tom and his private publishing clients create more than sixty-seven #1 Amazon bestselling books and counting.
