#1 New York Times bestselling
author Kathy Reichs returns with her sixteenth riveting novel featuring
forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan, whose examination of a young
girl killed in a hit and run in North Carolina triggers an investigation
into international human trafficking.
When Charlotte police
discover the body of a teenage girl along a desolate stretch of two-lane
highway, Temperance Brennan fears the worst. The girl’s body shows
signs of foul play. Inside her purse police find the ID card of a
prominent local businessman, John-Henry Story, who died in a horrific
flea market fire months earlier. Was the girl an illegal immigrant
turning tricks? Was she murdered?

The medical examiner has also
asked Tempe to examine a bundle of Peruvian dog mummies confiscated by
U.S. Customs. A Desert Storm veteran named Dominick Rockett stands
accused of smuggling the objects into the country. Could there be some
connection between the trafficking of antiquities and the trafficking of
humans?

As the case deepens, Tempe must also grapple with
personal turmoil. Her daughter Katy, grieving the death of her boyfriend
in Afghanistan, impulsively enlists in the Army. Meanwhile, Katy’s
father Pete is frustrated by Tempe’s reluctance to finalize their
divorce. As pressure mounts from all corners, Tempe soon finds herself
at the center of a conspiracy that extends all the way from South
America, to Afghanistan, and right to the center of Charlotte. “A genius
at building suspense” (Daily News, New York), Kathy Reichs is at her brilliant best in this thrilling novel.

***Short & Sweet Reviews are
short, quick reviews. These will mainly be used for series books where I
have already done full reviews on some of the earlier books or for
books that I feel will suffice with a quick review. These will not be
used for review requests or blog tours.

My thoughts:One of my favorite things about this series is that I not only do I get to catch up with a favorite character, but I feel like I get a little bit of an education as well – on so many different things, depending on what case Tempe happens to be working on. Sometimes it’s forensic-based and sometimes it’s history-based, but it’s still all fascinating.

Another thing I’ve come to appreciate after reading every book in this series is that no detail is unimportant, so when Tempe is working on what seems like unrelated cases, somehow, someway, things end up coming together and I love watching to see when they finally do. I also love trying to guess at the conclusion – though usually I‘m wrong, but that’s ok.

Once again Slidell is back – I just love the banter that goes on between him and Tempe. They have such a love/hate relationship sometimes. Tempe seems to be caught in a little bit of a love triange at the moment between Pete and Ryan – is she going to sign the divorce papers and how is she going to deal with Ryan‘s habit of going MIA? Things are quite complicated on the relationship-front for her.

I have really enjoyed going back to the beginning of this series to catch up – and now that I’m almost caught up – 1 book to go I think I might have to re-listen to the ones I already read just to keep the character development straight in my head…have you ever done that? Audio thoughts:Linda Emond does such a good job with the narration of this series…her voices for the characters are great and her pacing is perfect. I’ve really enjoyed listening to her narrated so many of these books.
