#30 Authors Day 11: Mary Kubica recommends Come Away With Me by Karma Brown

I’m so excited to be participating in this year’s #30Authors event. I have the lovely Mary Kubica here to discuss Karma Brown’s debut novel, Come Away With Me. I actually just read this book myself and loved it. I’m so glad Mary is reviewing this book here today!  And don’t forget to check out the amazing giveaway below as well. But first, here’s a little bit about the #30Authors event itself:

#30Authors is an annual event connecting readers, authors, and bloggers. Throughout the month of September, 30 authors review their favorite books on 30 blogs in 30 days. The event has been met with incredible support from and success within the literary community. In the six months following the event’s inaugural launch, the concept was published as an anthology by Velvet Morning Press (Legacy: An Anthology). Started by The Book Wheel, #30Authors remains active throughout the year and you can join in the fun by following along on Twitter at @30Authors, using the hashtag, #30Authors, or purchasing the anthology. Mary Kubica’s review of Come Away With Me by Karma Brown

At the onset of Karma Brown’s dazzling debut novel COME AWAY WITH ME, the marriage of Gabe and Tegan Lawson is rattled by tragedy. In the wake of loss, Tegan is overcome with grief and anger – an anger that is directed at her husband, Gabe, for allowing this tragedy and all of its heartbreaking aftereffects to happen. There is also guilt; Tegan knows she, too, is to blame for her and Gabe’s loss. In the weeks and months to come, Tegan spirals slowly downhill, losing faith in her marriage and herself. She’s overpowered by these emotions – by the anger, the grief and the guilt – and isn’t quite sure she can go on. Not until Gabe unearths a Jar of Spontaneity from the early days of their relationship, in a last ditch attempt to pull Tegan from the brink of depression and reclaim the once happy days of their lives and marriage.

With the help of their Jar of Spontaneity, Gabe and Tegan embark on a worldwide adventure that brings them from Thailand to Italy and finally to Hawaii, as Tegan sets off on her own path to healing. It’s here that Karma Brown dazzles as an author, creating these sumptuous landscapes that completely transport the reader from the United States to Asia to Europe and back again, submerging us in the culture and the scenery of these lush locales. The characters are completely genuine, and their relationship and dialogue as real as it comes. Tegan’s road to recovery is heartbreaking and hard-won, and as she begins to mend, the reader is offered a glimpse into Tegan and Gabe’s life before loss, when they were completely and utterly happy, and head-over-heels in love. There is quite a divergence between the lives of Gabe and Tegan before and after the tragedy, and as I watched their adventure unfold, I found myself hoping against all odds that they could find a way to recoup what was lost, and return to the loving couple they once were.

But there’s a twist. COME AWAY WITH ME ends with one of those paramount finales that made me want to flip immediately back to page one and start all over again. As someone who prides herself on figuring out surprise endings, I’ll gladly admit: I was completely blindsided, which made me admire Karma Brown’s abilities all the more. Her writing is luscious and beautiful, and COME AWAY WITH ME is one of those exceptional storylines that will stick with you for a long, long time. A must read from a talented new author.
