Audiobook Week 2013: Audiobook Tasks

June is Audiobook Month and Jen at Devourer of Books is hosting a special week dedicated to audiobooks this week.

Today’s discussion topic is about what we do while listening to audiobooks:

What do you do while you listen? Any particular tasks or games that you find amazing for audio time?

Ever since starting to listen to audios, about three and a half years ago, I’ve found myself listening while doing all sorts of things. At first, the audios I got were cd’s so I could only listen while in the car or indoors. Now that I figured out how to get the audios onto my iPod, I can listen anywhere! Here the some of the things I do while listening:

  • anytime I’m driving in the car by myself
  • doing maintenance on the blog – updating challenges, linking reviews, setting up review posts
  • doing mundane data entry for work
  • walking – either outdoors or on the treadmill at the gym (gotta get those steps in!!!)
  • baking/cooking
  • cleaning the house  – least favorite thing to do!
  • laundry
  • gardening
  • sunbathing in backyard – no need for squinting in the sun – just close eyes, relax and listen!

This summer I will be taking on the task of cleaning out all the closets and the basement…luckily the only thing that will make that task even somewhat enjoyable is the thought that I should be able to get some quality audio time in!!!

So, what do you do while listening to audiobooks?

I agree with all of your tasks, except the sunbathing, which I don't do anymore! The kitchen needs a fresh coat of paint and the only thing that will get me to tackle that huge job is the idea of all the audiobook time I can have when I do it! I prefer to paint alone for that reason!

I love that audio can be an incentive to get things done! Multitasking at it's best!!!

I might have to try listening while I work on blog stuff. I have a whole laundry list of things that I need to do but I hate taking the time. This way I could kill two birds with one stone. Great suggestion!

Does anyone enjoy cleaning? 😉 but audiobooks sure do make it more bearable. I've been known to do some extra cleaning just to get in a few more minutes of listening!

As long as the tasks don't require much thinking, it's nice to do while listening…I don't do commenting or writing reviews, though – for that I need to concentrate!

I've been known to take extra long walks just to get in a little more audio…not sure if I could do any more cleaning that I have to!

      Yes, it's quite the motivator!

I find it so interesting how audiobooks have become our companions when doing house work 😉

Yes…but thank goodness for them otherwise I would never get my house cleaned!

When I was working I would do the same. I couldn't believe I had never listened to audios at work before, it's so much fun especially if the task lends itself well to listening at the same time.

I work mostly from home, so it's easy to listen to audio books while doing work tasks. It definitely makes doing data entry more enjoyable!

I wish I could listen to audio while at work. I would get through so many books! Ah, sooo many wasted hours.

Isn't it funny how we avid readers think of no reading time as wasted hours!

I tried audio at work when I was playing with numbers (instead of words like usual) and I couldn't do it.

I am now dreaming of the day I can lay in the sun and listen to a book…without a toddler to catch. 🙂

I will admit, there are times I have to rewind the audio when doing data entry, but luckily that only happens every once in a while!

I've never listened to an audiobook..I'm just not sure that I'll like it. But all the comments here make me want to try (:

I suggest starting with a book you've already read – then you can just see how you like listening to a story vs reading it.

Audiobooks really do make mundane tasks more fun. I should follow your lead and plan some big summer cleaning projects and take my audiobook with me.
