Audio Book Week 2012: Your Audiobook Year

June is Audiobook Month and Jen at Devourer of Books is hosting a special week dedicated to audiobooks this week. This is my second year participating and I can’t wait to see what’s in store all week!

The first discussion topic for this week is “2011-2012, Your Audiobook
Year.” And the description for this discussion topic is:

Are you new to audiobooks in the last year? Have you been listening
to them forever but discovered something new this year? Favorite titles?
New times/places to listen? This is your chance to introduce yourself
and your general listening experience.

I have been listening to audio books for almost a year and a half now and now I can’t seem to live without them. I had been primarily just listening to them in the car and every once in a while I would listen to one in the house if I was doing some baking or data entry for work. Just this year, I started listening to them on my iPod (thanks to the help of some fellow bloggers who helped me figure it all out) and now I can listen to an audio book at the gym while on the treadmill or even while I am outside watering the plants! And now that I use the iPod, I usually have two different audios going at once – something I was a bit wary of at first, but haven’t had any trouble keeping the two stories separate.

Since last year’s Audio Book Week, I have listened to 26 audio books, 13 of which are from this year alone! I am once again participating in the Audio Book Challenge hosted at Teresa’s Reading Corner, which I wasn’t going to do at first, but then when I realized I was already listening to a lot of audio, I decided to join – better late than never, right? I love visiting the other participants to see what they are listening to.

Some of my favorite titles that I have listened to this past year are:

What about you? How was your audiobook year?

I am glad you figured out the iPod! I have lots of books on mine and look for reasons to listen!

I haven't listened to more than one audio book at a time but imagine I will sometime soon this summer as I have more in-house projects to accomplish than what I get around to during the school year.

I didn't think I would be able to do it, but as long as the books are different enough, it works.

I just started listening to audio books this year. I started two of them and did not like them, then I tried The Dressmaker and I love it! Now, I'm looking for other good ones.

Kristin Hannah's books are great to listen to if you like her work. I've listened to quite a few of hers and really like them. I'll have to see if my library has The Dressmaker on audio!

I went the opposite way! I used to listen to two audiobooks at a time, one for the car and one for the kitchen, because I got tired of realizing that one of the kids had borrowed the car with my current audiobook tape still in the player, but once I got the iPod, I kept it with me at (almost) all times. 😉

My husband now knows to turn the radio off right away if he gets into my car!

It was so good and the narrator is actually a famous actress – Sarah Paulson. It was funny b/c as I was listening to it, I knew I knew the voice from somewhere, so I googled the name and then realized she was in Down With Love, one of my favorite movies!

I listen to all of mine through my ipod, so I can stick with the one book whatever I am doing. My favorite audiobook so far this year has been Ready Player One, followed closely by Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Finnikin of the Rock.

I've been seeing Daughter of Smoke and Bone on a lot of lists today…I'm going to have to check that one out!

That's nice your friends helped you figure out how to load your iPod with audio! It's nice to not be able to take the audio with you and not be stuck in your car or in the room with the CD player or computer.

That's what I love about the audio book community – they are all so helpful!!!

Oh, I really enjoyed Home Front too. Talk about an emotional roller-coaster.

I almost always have one new audiobook going on the iPod, one e-book underway and usually a re-listen on the computer during work. I was surprised by how easy it is to keep track of all the different stories.

As long as they are different narrators and the plots are too similar, I find it very easy to keep them all separate.

I'm impressed by people who put multiple audiobooks on at once, I haven't managed that yet, of course I really ONLY listen on my ipod, so it might be sort of weird going back and forth.

Yeah, I would imagine it would. I just started doing more than one at a time.

I'm just starting to listen to audiobooks on the treadmill too. Glad listening on the ipod is working out for you. I need to figure out the audible app so I can take advantage of the special features like adjusting the speed, etc.
I'm writing down all your recs – they are all new to me, but I'm eager to try more fiction titles.
    Happy listening!

I don't know if there are any audios that I've listened to that I would adjust the speed…but I guess it would be cool to have that option. Is the app only for iPhones?

I am one of the ones that can listen to more than one book at a time. I have two teenaged daughters and my husband that all have different tastes in audiobooks, so it depends on who I am riding with what I listen to. When I am by myself, I get to pick! My daughters make me promise not to listen ahead. LoL

    Happy AudioBook Week!

As soon as I hear the narrator's voice, I'm able to get back into the story, so as long as the narrators are different, I'm able to keep the stories separate. That's great that your whole family likes audio!

I'm hoping to get an iPhone in the fall, but for now my iPod works. I was new at this time last year, and while I'm still figuring them out, I do enjoy them!

Isn't it crazy who quickly audiobooks become an important part of your day?

I haven't read any of your favorites. Must go check them out.

I think last year I ended up with a nice, long list of recommendations. I'm hoping for the same this time around.

Thank you for stopping by my blog. I love audio books now!!! Since I usually have 2 written books and one audio going at once I don't dare try to add more. Ha ha.

      June 26, 2012 / 2:27 pm

I usually only have 1 print book going and just started with the 2 audios at a time. Sometimes, though, I don't get to the one audio all week, so it takes a while to get through them.
