Review: Second Chance Pass by Robyn Carr (e-book)

First line: Paul Haggerty was finally back in Grants Pass after almost six months in Virgin River and there was an ache in his chest he just couldn’t ease.

Synopsis from B&N: In the space of a few months Vanessa buried her husband, Matt, and gave birth to their son—breaking her heart while filling it with a whole new kind of love. But the one man she longs to share this love with now acts as if she doesn’t exist.

Paul Haggerty lives by the marine motto: Semper Fi. Ever faithful to his best friend, he’s done right by Matt’s widow as best he can…considering he’s been secretly in love with her for years. Now, just as he’s about to make his move, another woman has staked her claim on him—a claim that will be tough to escape.

With courage, humility and not a little meddling from the good folks of Virgin River, Vanni and Paul might just get a second chance to have the love they both desire and deserve.

My thoughts: This is the 5th book in Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series that I am slowly making my way through. To date there are 19 books in this series and so far I’ve read 6 of them. I love that this series provides new characters with their struggles while keeping us informed on the previous characters we’ve met who live in Virgin River.

Second Chance Pass is primarily Paul and Vanni’s story. Vanni is a young war widow and new mother, and Paul was the best friend of Vanni’s late husband and has secretly loved Vanni for years. The road to love is rarely smooth and Paul and Vanni have some major obstacles to overcome. While this couple is the primary romantic focus of the book, the Virgin River series is, at its heart, about all of the people who populate this small mountain town. Favorite characters from previous Virgin River books have important roles in this story, giving the reader plenty of time to catch up with old friends, like Mel and Jack Sheridan, and meet some new ones too. We get to see what’s going on with Vanni’s father, General Walt Booth and the retired movie-star neighbor, and Vanni’s brother Tom and his girlfriend Brenda – which lead to some humorous but tender scenes. On top of all that, there is always something suspenseful happening in this little town – and this book has a few that I won’t spoil for you.

I always think that this series cannot get any better than the last book, but each new succession in the series wraps the reader even tighter in the adventures, the friendships, and the true loves that are being discovered in a small perfect area of the world, known as Virgin River. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
