Book Beginnings on Friday: The Flower Reader

Please join Rose City Reader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.  Please remember to include the title of the book and the author.

I’m reading The Flower Reader by Elizabeth Loupas:

I hated the queen, hated her down to the deepest marrow of my bones.

I have about 100 pages left in this and am having a hard time putting it down. It’s filled with mystery and intrigue and of course, life at the Scottish courts. I will be posting my review and a guest post by Elizabeth Loupas next week as part of the blog tour. Have you read this one yet?

    Hi Kristin,

I can't wait to read your review of this one, it sounds utterly captivating and ruthless, at one and the same time.

Are you going to be reading Elizabeth's other book 'The Second Duchess'? that sounds brilliant as well.

I was intrigued by the title of the book, however, after reading the synopsis, I have spent the last few minutes researching 'floramancy' and now it all makes sense.

Thanks for sharing this great find for my reading list and have a good weekend,

    Yvonne

This definitely deals with all the court intrigue that I've come to enjoy.

Oh, I like this first sentence, I bet this is a great and atmospheric read. Hatred is a pretty powerful emotion.

Great start, although not so good for the queen, I guess. Thanks for visiting my blog earlier. Happy reading!

I've only read a few books about Mary Queen of Scots – this is definitely an interesting take on her time in court.

"The marrow of [her] bones" is a terrific phrase! I am making a vow to use that expression at least one time this weekend — not the part about the queen, but the marrow part for sure!

Thanks for linking your post on Book Beginnings!

It really does show how far the hatred goes!

Kristin, I would like to link back to your review instead of writing a review myself. Would you email me when you have the link up. My email is

I think we both finished the book last night. I stayed up late I was so close.
