Booking Through Thursday: Giving Up

Today’s Booking Through Thursday question asks:

If you’re not enjoying a book, will you stop mid-way? Or do you push through to the end? What makes you decide to stop?

I can’t remember the last book I started reading and stopped. I try very hard to finish all the books I start. Most times, I am glad I did, as a slow start usually gives way to a compelling story. However, if the book was really not doing it for me, I would probably just put it down – there are way too many books out there that I want to read to waste time reading something I am not enjoying.

Of course, there are instances where I do read the book even if I’m not enjoying the book – case in point, The Great Oom. My book club picked this book for our July meeting and it was a tough book to get through. I plowed through, though, for two reasons – one was that book club was meeting at my house and I felt as host I should finish the book, and the other reason was that I really wanted to be able to discuss the book. (It turns out that everyone in book club felt the same way but all trudged through it!)

What about you?

Don't think I've ever heard of The Great Oom before, but I like that title! I'll have to find out more about it. Hope you're reading something you enjoy more now!

    My answer: Giving Up.

If a book doesn't grab me I have to put it aside…too many books to read.

I've never heard of The Great Oom either…but I really feel like there's something wrong with me when I give up on a book everyone else loves.

I used to push through the book thinking and hoping it would get better. Now, I've given up that philosphy and decided if it doesn't have me hooked by page 100, it just won't be happening. I've only done it with book lately.
